Art Uncovered

The beautiful art of

Recrafted books

Broken and redundant old books meticulously re-crafted to showcase the wonderful art within.

In the mid to late nineteenth century the artists and engravers were producing their finest work, steel plate engraving produced the hiighest quality most detailed prints and hand colouring brought many illustrations to life.

Protected from daylight and airflow many of these images are in perfect condition irrespective of the state of the binding and cover boards.

These unloved volumes are my source material, often found in one of the few traditional second hand bookshops that still trade in the small towns and villages where low rents and philanthropic landlords still exist.

British Insects by the Reverend JG Wood, probably the most prolific of the Victorian
natural history writers 470x360mm. £650

All books are encased in a custom box frame which I construct from raw FSC timber sections, stain and seal with Danish oil then glaze with glass and back with Swedish birch plywood.

Common Moths of England from 1870 by the reverend JG Wood
275x330mm £285

Some books are still relevant and enjoyable, Alice in Wonderland with the timeless art of John Tenniel is one. Be assured. I will only use copies that are in appalling condition and no longer readable.

Robert Gibbings was an Irish Traveller, writer, woodblock artist and naturalist whose life and work inspired the young David Attenborough.
410x360mm £290

All books are tested for paper quality and acidity to ensure that there will be no fading or browning. Books and stabilised with pins and brass wire and mounted with screws to the birch ply backboard. As with all art direct sunlight should be avoided.

Visitors are always welcome to Ealing to view and perhaps purchase items. I don’t send items by post or courier due to risk of damage.

Evocative engravings by Giacomelli in Michelet’s 1875 poetic romance on the life of birds
